The safety of you and your family is of the highest importance to us here at Persil – it’s as important as providing you with great cleaning results. To ensure that you and your little ones stay safe and sound we have made changes to some of our packaging so that you know the best way to store it and the packs are less attractive to children.

Persil capsules are perfectly safe to handle when used properly. But if your little ones do play with them, they could burst and cause irritation to eyes and skin. So, because we
know how curious kids can be, it’s important to keep Persil capsules, and all detergents for that matter, out of reach. That way, everyone stays happy.

If you are ever in any doubt just call our customer care line, or for more information, please take a look at our online safe storage and use tips.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Make a Memory Tree of family’s keepsakes and help your kids learn more about their family members. Download the full guide here or follow the simplified instructions below.

What you’ll need:

2 x coat hangers

Bottle caps

Egg box

Plastic bottles

Plant pot

Wool

Paints and paint brushes

Polystyrene

Ribbon and material

Random small items to decorate the tree – feathers, sparkly decorations, and more

Fallen sticks with lots of branches

How to make yours:

Using the paints, encourage your kids to decorate the collection of sticks and branches. Once dry, the Memory Tree is ready to assemble by tying a selection of the colourful sticks together.

Now it’s time for the sticks to be secured into the plant pot. To do this, carefully fill the base of the plant pot with polystyrene and stand the sticks into the polystyrene.

To complete the tree, secure bottle caps, such as old lids from laundry bottles, to the branches with string, or hang them off coat hangers attached to the branches. For extra spectacle, make sure your kids decorate the baskets too! Once the entire tree is decorated and the baskets are in place, it’s time to collect some memories

Now comes the important part, becoming a memory collector! It’s time for kids to get together with family members, asking them about the small personal souvenirs which mean a lot or make them smile. As they keep collecting, they’ll be amazed by the stories behind items the family has kept! Offer a pen and notebook to take notes, if your children are old enough.

There are no limits on the objects they can gather, as long as the items can fit into a Memory Tree basket and are lightweight: think about holiday mementoes and souvenirs, tickets, badges, baby ID wrist tags, photos, jewellery…the possibilities are endless.

Now your kids have planted all your family memories! Why not try one of our other Play with Purpose activities?

Unwanted plastic bags can make fantastic eco mats for the garden – and it’s a great way to have fun recycling. Download the full guide here or follow the simplified instructions below.

What you’ll need:

Lots of plastic bags – with as many different colours as possible

Pen

A large piece of strong cardboard (an old box would work well)

Ruler

3 large garbage bags

Scissors

How to make yours:

To begin, each plastic bag needs to be cut with scissors down both of its long sides so it can be unfolded and flattened out to make one large rectangle. These will serve as the weaving material later. Once all the bags have been trimmed, kids should pile them up and set them aside.

Now it’s time for the kids to make one long plastic strip out of the garbage bags, to make the ‘threads’ onto which the plastic-bag strips will be woven. Again, carefully cutting down both sides of the bags, the garbage bags will open up into a large sheet. Once all three have been cut open, kids should carefully tie the ends together so they make a really long strip of plastic.

Once the bags have been prepared, kids will then need to make a weaving ‘loom’ or frame out of the cardboard, which will hold the garbage bag strips in place whilst the plastic bags are woven through them. Make sure all the sides of the box are cut away to leave a large, flat rectangle. With the pen and ruler, kids should measure equal spaces along the edges of the shorter sides of the rectangle. The spaces should be roughly 5cm – 10cm apart. Once the spaces have been measured, kids should cut slits along them, again about 5cm deep.

Take the long garbage bag strip and loop it back and forth securely between the slits on the cardboard, carefully tying both ends across the back of the board. Now it’s time to start weaving!

Have a Go!

Take a plastic bag from the pile, fixing one end to the cardboard frame. Kids should then weave the bag in and out of the frame, adding new bags as they go. Remember to push each bag up to make the weave as tight as it can be.

When the kids get to the end of the frame, ensure the last plastic bag is secured and prepare to remove the mat from the frame. To do this, kids must cut through the garbage bag strips secured between the cardboard slits and tie two ends of the garbage bag strip together at a time.
Once all the ends are tied together, you will have an finished eco-mat!

Now your kids have found a useful way to recycle old plastic bags! Why not try one of our other Play with Purpose activities?

Setting up a bird café is a rewarding way for your kids to nurture the bird life around them and a great way to use up leftover food. Download the full guide here or follow the simplified instructions below.

What you’ll need:

Containers from the recycling, such as plastic pots or large bottle caps

Kitchen weighing scales

Tin foil Baking tray

Long lengths of string

Saucepan

Mixing bowl

250g solid fat, such as suet

Cookie cutters

Wooden spoon

Colourful wool or ribbon

Notepad and pen

250g bird feed (available in supermarkets, pet shops or garden supply shops)

250g food scraps, like stale bread or fruit peelings

How to make yours:

Now they’re ready to get cooking. First, supervise kids as they carefully melt the fat in the saucepan. As soon as it’s melted, remove it from the heat to let it cool (be sure to turn off the stove). When you’re sure it’s cool enough, kids can mix in the bird seed and scraps!

Kids can then lay out moulds flat on a baking tray .Any object that will hold the bird food mixture can be used – try cookie cutters, detergent bottle caps, even crazy shapes made from folded tin foil!

Then, kids can lay a loop or length of string into each mould and spoon the mixture in, before placing the moulds in the fridge to set overnight!

The next day, your young chefs are ready take their bird food dishes out of their moulds. Why don’t they try pushing twigs or pencils into the dishes to add a perch for the birds to stand on?

Now they can find a good spot to hang them outside -in a garden… or on a balcony! If needed, give them a hand tying their bird café to branches or hanging flowerpots.

If you don’t have easy access to outdoor space near your home, is there a family member or friend’s home where the kids could hang their café?

They’ve done it! Now your kids have cooked up a storm in the Bird Cafe!

Why not try one of our other Play with Purpose activities?

Save energy around the home by creating recycling signs from discarded eggshells and using them as little reminder messages. Download the full guide here or follow the simplified instructions below.

What you’ll need:

About 12 eggshells, saved after cooking and rinsed clean

Glue

Acrylic paint and brushes

Crayons or coloured pencils

Thick paper or card

Old newspaper to cover the workspace

Strong sticky tape to hang the mosaics

How to make yours:

To get kids thinking about their designs, ask them to look around the house and find things that could be changed to be better for the environment. Has someone forgotten to turn the taps off? Has anyone left the TV on? How can the family be more eco-friendly?

On a newspaper-covered flat surface, kids can get painting the eggshells in a rainbow of colours! Once the eggshells are painted, they can be set aside for a while in a warm place to dry. When they’re completely dry, kids will need to break them up into small pieces to make the coloured tiles they’ll use to create their mosaics.

Have a Go!

On the thick paper, kids should sketch out symbols and pictures to illustrate the reminder messages they’ll need. What about a recycling symbol for the fridge door, or a teardrop to hang above the dripping tap? Then, using tiny dabs of glue, kids should attach their eggshell tiles to the drawings to create colourful mosaic signs. Lay the mosaics out flat in a warm dry place, or outside in the sunshine, so the glue can set.

Now your kids have identified key areas to save energy and recycle and designed creative
signposts! And why stop there – Now they’ve mastered the art of mosaic making, why don’t the kids try recycling an old photo frame into a thoughtful present?

Not everything you throw away is fit for the rubbish dump! Recycled Gardening will see your kids breathe new life into old bottles and containers… and teach them about patience and responsibility for nature as they watch plants burst into colour! Download the full guide here or follow the simplified instructions below.

What you’ll need:

A sturdy, water-resistant box from the recycling, like a washing-powder carton

Soil

Seedlings, bulbs or small plants

Cardboard

Marker pen

Paint and brushes

PVA glue

Gravel

How to make yours:

Supervise your kids as they use scissors to cut off the top of box off to make a tray and then to punch holes in the bottom of the carton, creating a plant pot that will drain when watered.

Kids can then decorate their pot and tray with paints and anything else they like! Once the paint is dry, the decorated plant pot can be put together.

Kids should sprinkle a layer of gravel in the tray and set the pot down on top of it. Then, they can fill the carton nearly to the top with soil.

Have a Go!

Now it’s time for kids to give their seeds, seedlings or bulbs a good start by sowing them in the soil. Encourage them to check with you or use the internet to learn about the best conditions for their particular seeds. Kids should make sure they know the right soil depth and amount of water to use! Next, it’s time to head outdoors, find a sunny spot such as a windowsill or garden and settle the plant pots in to grow. Then, it’s over to Mother Nature to work her magic!

Now your kids have planted and nurtured their own recycled garden! Why not try one of our other Play with Purpose activities?

There are different types of bleach that should be used for different fabrics, so make sure you know whether only oxygen bleach/no-chlorine bleach is allowed, or if you’re free to use any bleach – and, of course, always look out for the ‘do not bleach’ symbol.

Any bleach allowed
Chlorine based bleaching allowed, only cold and dilute solution
